Mark Zuckerberg plans to study cryptocurrency in order to decentralize Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook, announced on Thursday that he plans to study the Blockchain technology and other decentralizing technologies as part of his bid to improve the social networking service.

In a Facebook post describing the personal challenges for 2018, Zuckerberg mentions that he will study both the positive and negative aspects of the technology underlying the cryptocurrency market. He went on to note that one of his main goals is to focus on “fixing important issues” in technology, media, and government. He wrote:

“I’m looking forward to bringing groups of experts together to discuss and help work through these topics.”

However, his comments on decentralization have caught the attention of the cryptocurrency community, as he described the technology as one of the most interesting technological developments right now. He said:

“There are important counter-trends to this – like encryption and cryptocurrency – that take power from centralized systems and put it back into people’s hands…I’m interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies, and how best to use them in our services.”
